This Batwa baskets incorporates techniques not found in any other African basket. To the coiled grass construction a supplementary raffia woven design is added. The Batwa – the Twa people, a “pygmy” people – live in the border area of southwestern Uganda, northwestern Rwanda and eastern Congo, in the area of the Ruwenzori Mountains, in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They live among a native gorilla population just like we live among whitetail deer. 4 3/4 x 4 1/4” diameter (12 x 11 cm)
