Contemporary Nude African Woman Painted on Wood

Artists in Africa are increasingly expressing themselves through contemporary art media, although this painting was more traditionally painted on wood. I bought this painting in a market in Abidjan, Ivory Coast where numerous artists are represented. The artist’s signature on the front of the painting is difficult to read although he has titled the painting on the back, along with his signature which appears to be “Divuy”. The work is entitled “Le Femme Africian” and “The African Girl from the Bathroom”, if I am reading it correctly. Considering that this is incorrect French and the artist has included a title in English I might conclude the artist is not Ivorian but from an English speaking African country. This small painting measures 15 3/4 x 11 3/4″ (40 x 30 cm)
