These Batwa baskets are unlike any other African basket. To the coiled grass construction a supplementary raffia woven design is added. The Batwa – the Twa people, a “pygmy” people – live in the border area of southwestern Uganda, northwestern Rwanda and eastern Congo, in the area of the Ruwenzori Mountains, in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They live among a native gorilla population just like we live among whitetail deer. 6 3/4 x 9” (17 x 23 cm) top diameter.
