These Batwa baskets are unlike any other African basket. To the coiled grass bound by dyed raffia a supplementary raffia woven design is added to form this extraordinary basket. The Batwa – the Twa people, a “pygmy” people – live in the border area of southwestern Uganda, northwestern Rwanda and eastern Congo, in the area of the Ruwenzori Mountains, in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They live among a native gorilla population just like we live among whitetail deer. 9” tall x 7 1/2” top diameter (23 x 19 cm)
