These Batwa baskets are unlike any other African basket. To the coiled grass construction a supplementary raffia woven design is added. The Batwa – the Twa people, a “pygmy” people – live in the border area of southwestern Uganda, northwestern Rwanda and eastern Congo, in the area of the Ruwenzori Mountains, in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They live among a native gorilla population just like we live among whitetail deer. 9 3/8 x 11 1/2” (24 x 29 cm) top diameter.
