Who is Ella Fitzgerald?
Ella Jane Fitzgerald, born in Newport News, Va. on April 25, 1917, was an American jazz singer, sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, intonation, and a “horn-like” improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.
In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. She was the first African American woman to win a Grammy.
